More than 150 health care personnel to ensure the health care of riders and spectators at the Red Bull Grand Prix of Spain.

SEMESUR ASSISTANCE makes a great deployment of human and technical means to guarantee the best medical assistance in the Jerez Circuit.

The Red Bull Grand Prix of Spain held at the Jerez Circuit is one of the major sporting events that Spain hosts throughout the sporting calendar. Nearly 200,000 spectators gather in one of the world´s greatest circuits to enjoy the fastest riders, during a weekend in which emotion, fun, good weather and sport are transformed into a great motorbike party. In the midst of all this vortex, the SEMESUR ASSISTANCE team is responsible for ensuring the best medical care for pilots and spectators. To do this, a large deployment of technical and human resources is made up of more than 150 people and about 20 vehicles.

At the time of designing the medical assistance unit a clear division is made: on the one hand a unit of about 90 health care personnel is organized and coordinated at the sports ground (they act directly on the track of the circuit); and on the other hand, a medical unit is built for the attention of the spectators that are located at different stands and public zones of the Jerez Circuit.

MEDICAL UNIT ON THE TRACK

The medical unit on the track is coordinated by the medical director of the race course and consists of a medical centre with all types of specialists: anaesthetist, intensivist, traumatologist, surgeon, radiologist, nurses, assistants….the entire team of a medical centre with the appropriate means to carry out an initial guaranteed assistance. The purpose of this centre is no other than stabilise any pilot who could suffer a serious accident.

In addition, 24 other teams are distributed throughout the track: 10 ambulances (both mobile ICU and basic life support vehicles with doctor, nurse and emergency technician) and 14 ground teams or ground posts (consisting of a nurse and two paramedics). The task of any of them is to take an immediate action: rapid evacuation of an injured pilot from the runway and his transfer to the medical centre. There the patient care would continue.

In addition, there is a dynamic ambulance that serves as a wild card for help in any part of the circuit. This vehicle is staffed with emergency technicians and a nurse to assist in the event of a multiple fall on the track or if one of the ambulances has moved to perform a medical service.

Dorna Sports, organiser of the Motorcycle World Championship, also brings two BMW sports cars with two ex-pilots in command so that they could move quickly around the circuit. In each of them travels an intensivist and an emergency nurse from SEMESUR ASSISTANCE with all the equipment for advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the track. These vehicles will be used in the case of very serious accident in which it is necessary to act immediately before the subsequent evacuation to the medical centre.

The sports unit is completed by a ground team made up of a doctor and a nurse with resuscitation equipment who move around the pit lane and paddock area for first aid while an ambulance arrives.

MEDICAL UNIT FOR THE PUBLIC

In a totally independent way another specific medical unit has been created in order to provide medical care to the spectators who attend the sport event. In this case, the number of people increases along the three days that the race takes place in the Circuit of Jerez. Bearing in mind that the number of spectators grows over the weekend, the medical team is formed on the first day by about 40 health care providers, on the second day by 50 and on the third day by about 60.

This personnel is distributed mainly in five medical points of assistance distributed by the different public areas. Two of them, with advanced life support equipment, doctors, nurses and assistants (in one of them there is even an intensivist). The other three are staffed and equipped to provide basic life support.

In addition, there are pairs of health care assistants scattered around the stands, to offer a first assistance while the ambulance arrives. In terms of vehicles, the unit for spectators is similar to that of the track: mobile ICU and basic life support ambulances.

SEMESUR ASSISTANCE also has a nurse with advanced life support material that can be moved by motorbike in order to reach the complicated areas that the ambulance may take longer to reach. It is a fast intervention vehicle.

Should the patient need to be evacuated to a hospital, a medical helicopter is also available. If the patient is one of the spectators, the 061´s personnel will be in charge of evacuating in their helicopter.

Two members of the SEMESUR ASSISTANCE team are permanently at the Advanced Command Post, together with those responsible for the rest of the forces involved in the security of the event: Civil Guard, Local Police, National Police, Red Cross (they are in charge of attending the public in the vicinity of the premises), 112, 061… From there, the assistance in the case of any incidents that may occur is coordinated.

Logically, in order to guarantee speed and effectiveness, the SEMESUR ASSISTANCE team participates in all the security meetings held in the days prior to the event. In addition, the medical personnel is being prepared specifically for several months for this event with protocol workshops or meetings and performance that allows them to offer the best health care to both pilots and spectators.

In any case, SEMESUR ASSISTANCE already has a wide experience both in this specific event as well as in other similar events and, taking into account the global character of this company, it would always be possible to build a medical team with these characteristics in any part of the world.
