As every year, with the drop in temperatures, the Spanish Ministry of Health reminds us of some of the most important recommendations to prevent the effects of cold weather on health.

With the arrival of possible cold waves and taking into account the current situation regarding the cost of electricity to heat homes, it can be very beneficial to consider certain actions that can help us during this winter.

RECOMMENDATIONS AGAINST LOW TEMPERATURES

Low temperatures and cold waves can become problematic if we do not know how to act properly. For this reason, we remind you of the recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health.

• Outdoors, breathe through your nose and not through your mouth, as the air is warmed as it passes through the nasal passages, reducing the cold air that reaches the lungs.

• Take extra precautions in case of ice on the streets. A high percentage of cold-related injuries are caused by falls when slipping on ice patches. Use non-slip footwear whenever possible.

• It is important to bear in mind that several layers of thin clothing provide more protection than a single thick layer, as they create insulating air pockets between them.

• If you use braziers or a fireplace at home, ventilate the room frequently to prevent CO₂ accumulation. Ventilate the house at least twice a day, for 15 minutes each time, to ensure air renewal. Turn off electric and gas heaters during the night.

• Do not take medication without a medical prescription. Keep in mind that some medications can worsen problems caused by exposure to cold.

• Eat a varied diet and consume fruit daily. Drink fluids, even if you are not thirsty, especially water and hot drinks, and avoid alcohol consumption, as it reduces the sensation of cold.

• Always stay well informed about weather forecasts before leaving home.

• Although anyone can suffer a problem related to low temperatures, pay greater attention to people who may be vulnerable to cold weather. If necessary, contact your healthcare professional.

• Flu vaccination is recommended for people over 65 years of age and for those suffering from chronic diseases (cardiopulmonary, metabolic and immunosuppressed conditions).
