A SAFE HOLLY WEEK DURING THE PANDEMIC

After two years, Holy Week returns to the streets just as we remembered it, although this time it takes place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many experts and healthcare professionals warn that public behaviour will be key to preventing a rise in infections or the emergence of new outbreaks.

A SAFE HOLY WEEK

To ensure a safe Holy Week, vaccination plays a fundamental role, together with preventive measures such as wearing face masks, maintaining physical distance, ensuring good ventilation in indoor spaces, and practising proper hand hygiene.

Nicolás Merchante, Director of the Infectious Diseases and Microbiology Unit at Valme Hospital, states: "Anyone who has not yet been vaccinated should get vaccinated, and anyone who has not received the third dose should do so. During the last wave, we confirmed that protection with two doses was clearly lower compared with the three-dose schedule."

Other specialists point out that Holy Week celebrations will take place without widespread diagnostic testing or general quarantine measures. Therefore, during a week when large crowds and increased social interaction are expected, it is essential "not to let our guard down" despite the current epidemiological situation.

We must continue to follow all recommended preventive measures, especially those aimed at protecting older adults and the most vulnerable people, particularly in situations that may increase the risk of infection, such as staying in enclosed spaces and attending crowded events.

The healthcare community remains hopeful that vaccination will help make this Holy Week safer while preventing an increase in the most severe cases of COVID-19.
