RAPID ANTIGEN TESTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS
The sharp increase in COVID-19 cases during the Christmas season has led to a surge in the demand for rapid antigen tests. The sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic continued to spread rapidly across Spain and the rest of Europe, driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant.
Below, we explain what to do if you test positive on a rapid antigen test before Christmas, how reliable these tests are, and when it is best to take one before attending holiday celebrations.
RAPID ANTIGEN TESTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS
Before traditional Christmas dinners, many people choose to take a rapid antigen test before attending company parties, family meals, or gatherings with friends. But is taking an antigen test before a Christmas celebration really effective?
A rapid antigen test can help determine whether you are infected with COVID-19 before attending a Christmas or New Year's Eve gathering, particularly if you will be spending time with older adults or people at higher risk of severe illness.
However, a negative result should not lead to complacency. Even if you test negative, it remains important to continue following preventive measures indoors, including maintaining physical distance whenever possible, ensuring good ventilation, and wearing a face mask when appropriate.
CAN RAPID ANTIGEN TESTS PRODUCE FALSE NEGATIVES?
Rapid antigen tests are generally reliable, but false-negative results can occur. For this reason, a confirmatory PCR test may be recommended when clinical suspicion remains high or symptoms are present.
According to the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), false negatives are more likely when the viral load is still low, particularly during the very early or late stages of infection.
It is also important to remember that an antigen test only reflects your infection status at the time the sample is taken. A negative result does not prevent you from becoming infected later the same day or in the following days.
WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE A RAPID ANTIGEN TEST?
Rapid antigen tests perform best when taken within the first seven days after infection or within the first five days after symptoms begin.
If you are taking a test before a Christmas lunch or dinner and do not have symptoms, the best approach is to take the test on the same day as the event, shortly before leaving home. This minimizes the time during which you could become infected after testing.
Testing a few days before a Christmas or New Year's celebration may still provide useful information, but it offers less reassurance than testing immediately beforehand.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU TEST POSITIVE BEFORE A CHRISTMAS GATHERING?
If you receive a positive rapid antigen test result before a Christmas or New Year's celebration, you should stay at home, self-isolate, and avoid attending any social gatherings.
A positive antigen test indicates that you are likely contagious and could transmit COVID-19 to family members and friends, including those who have been vaccinated.
You should also inform anyone with whom you have recently been in close contact so they can take appropriate precautions and consider getting tested before attending their own Christmas celebrations.
