The current situation regarding travel abroad, after three years in which restrictions were imposed on international travel, has become considerably normalised. As every year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation launches its traditional “Travel Safely” campaign, which highlights the importance of “travelling informed and safely” and emphasises three fundamental aspects when travelling abroad.

The current situation regarding travel abroad, after three years in which restrictions were imposed on international travel, has become considerably normalised. As every year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation launches its traditional “Travel Safely” campaign, which highlights the importance of “travelling informed and safely” and emphasises three fundamental aspects when travelling abroad:

• Check travel recommendations before choosing a destination.
• Register in the traveller registry.
• Take out travel insurance.

Through the campaign video, all people planning to travel are encouraged to check the recommendations that the Ministry reviews periodically and, if necessary, contact the consular offices of the destination country, which are available 24 hours a day in the event of any emergency that may arise.

The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness of the different guidelines required before travelling abroad and to provide information about possible COVID-19 requirements. These travel recommendations provide:

• Health information (such as vaccination certificate QR codes or PCR/antigen tests, quarantines, etc.).
• Relevant information regarding required documentation (passports and visas).
• Security conditions, risks and warnings.

It is important to know that once abroad, every Spanish citizen has the right to use the services offered by their corresponding Consular Office within its areas of responsibility: a 24-hour emergency telephone service, emergency assistance to issue safe-conduct documents and temporary passports, assistance for victims of gender-based violence and general consular protection.

The campaign also appeals to travellers’ responsibility, reminding them that, once abroad, every Spanish citizen is subject to the laws of the country they are visiting and must respect them at all times. In this regard, Embassies and Consulates face limits that they cannot exceed, although they will always provide protection and assistance within their areas of responsibility.

You can access more detailed information about this “Travel Safely” campaign on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on its social networks, as well as through its entire network of Embassies and Consulates.
